THE mAIN STAGES OF GUM DISEASE

Gingivitis - Gingivitis, the most common form of gum disease and fully reversible with professional treatment and at-home care. Gingivitis is identifiable by symptoms like red, swollen gums that easily bleed, a receding gum line, and bad breath. So long as basic oral hygiene habits are kept up at home between dentist visits, gingivitis can be stopped in its tracks.

Periodontitis - The second stage of gum disease is damage done to both the soft tissues surrounding the teeth as well as the tooth roots themselves. Gums are not only swollen but also become tender when touched, spaces develop between teeth, and infections run rampant. In order to combat this ailments beyond just professional cleanings, Tartar and bacteria must be removed from both surfaces of the teeth and beneath the gums through a process called scaling .

Advanced Periodontitis - This is the most severe stage of gum disease, characterized by significant loss of healthy soft tissue and bone that support the teeth. Advanced periodontitis is treated with all of the methods mentioned above, as well as laser assisted gum therapy, which uses a precision laser to kill 99% of harmful bacteria present in the periodontal pockets. Some patients may lose teeth during this stage or require extraction in order restore oral health.
